Yesterday Once More at Old School Delights

Although we live in close proximity to Upper Thomson Road and its promises of good food, we’ve sadly never ventured there till recently. But I’m glad we finally did! I’ve been wanting to write a post about our experience at Old School Delights, but somehow never quite found that extra push to do it. After dropping by for a hearty lunch last weekend, I’m finally sitting down to write this…

Firstly, I really love the concept of the restaurant! Colorful chalkboards, Enid Blyton storybooks, biscuits kept in tin boxes, the ‘Excercise-book’ menu, and even much-loved childhood games like Five Stones and Old Maid. We were instructed to write our orders on a mini whiteboard, and hand it to the staff when we were done. Felt like I was transported back in time to when I was a little girl–those carefree days.

Food here is reminiscent of eating in my Grandmother’s kitchen–simply made–yet full of flavor. On my second visit, I saw an old lady coming out of the kitchen, so I’ll make an educated guess the recipes are hers. You can expect authentic local delights such as Mee Siam, Laksa, Curry Chicken and Nasi Lemak. If you’re craving something slightly more Western, I hear the Black Pepper Chicken and Chips is really good too! I personally love the Chicken Macaroni, Nasi Lemak and Laksa, all absolutely yummy and comforting. If you cannot live without your chili, please remember to request for extra Sambal Belacan. You will not regret, it is amazing. They actually do sell a small container of chili for two bucks. A little on the pricey side, but as a chili-holic it’s absolutely worth it. I also really recommend the ‘Big Basket O’ Wings‘. Everybody loves some fried chicken, and the garlic-chili dip it comes with complements it perfectly. We’ve yet to try the desserts there, because we’re always stuffed by the time we’re done. The Chocolate Banana Fudge Cake looks absolutely tantalizing though! I am definitely going to leave some space for it the next time we’re there.

Staff there were really friendly and courteous, providing prompt service with a smile. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this, because it’s so difficult to find good service in Singapore. My boyfriend even got a pack of those colorful ice biscuits for free because the cashier found out how much he loved them. It’s these little details and thoughtfulness that make people want to come back for more.

If you’re looking for a place to grab some eats and hang out with friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon, Old School Delights is a great choice. Good service and reasonably priced, tasty food always makes for a winner. Every time I miss my Grandmother’s cooking, I’m definitely making a beeline for Old School Delights.
